Just Beachin’ | 50 Beach Quotes

By Jeramie Eginoire

January 5, 2021

Beach quotes. They have a way of recalling the beauty and magic of the beach. Having just returned to a Midwest snowstorm after a little stop in Miami Beach and the Florida Keys, the blue skies, turquoise waters, and white sand beaches are dominating my thoughts. The absence of the daily grind combined with the presence and full attention given to and received from loved ones (i.e. phones left in bags!) only made it that much sweeter.

While back home and trying to stay warm dressed in layers instead of swimming trunks, some of my favorite beach quotes keep running through my mind and I thought I'd share. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the vast majority of humankind like the feel of a warm sun and cool breeze, the sounds of waves crashing, kids playing, and seagulls cawing, and the smells of salt and beachside restaurants. Hopefully these 50 beach quotes will help transport you (at least mentally) to my favorite place in the world to be--the beach!

Beach Quotes

I could never stay long enough on the shore; the tang of the untainted, fresh, and free sea air was like a cool, quieting thought.

Helen Keller

#1 “I could never stay long enough on the shore; the tang of the untainted, fresh, and free sea air was like a cool, quieting thought.”

– Helen Keller

The list begins with a beach quote that sums up just about every feeling I have when I'm standing on a shoreline.  The "quieting thought" is a pretty welcome escape from ambulance sirens from time to time.  The fact that the quote comes from one of the most inspirational and inciteful humans of all-time just adds to the meaning behind it.

#2 “Don’t grow up too quickly, lest you forget how much you love the beach.”

– Michelle Held

#3 "I’d rather stay here and work instead of going to the beach.  Said no one ever."

- Unknown

#4 "Sometimes just being on a beach with my loved ones is all the adventure I need."

-Guy Laliberte

#5 “Why do we love the sea? It is because it has some potent power to make us think things we like to think.”

– Robert Henri

No Shoes.  No Shirt. No Problems.

Kenny Chesney Lyric

#6 "No Shoes. No Shirt. No Problems."

– Kenny Chesney lyric

I'm a pretty big fan of music that can transport you to another place and put you in a better mood.  Some beach quotes are found in songs and this quote does both of the above for me and is the epitome of how I feel when I'm at the beach!

#7 "The best therapy is beach therapy."

– Unknown

#8 “Every time I stand before a beautiful beach, its waves seem to whisper to me: If you choose the simple things and find joy in nature’s simple treasures, life and living need not be so hard.”

– Psyche Roxas-Mendoza

#9 "I loved the smell of ocean water.  Salt always smells like memory."

- Matthew Stadler

#10 “The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.”

– Jacques Yves Cousteau

You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.

Jon Kabat-Zinn

#11 "You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf."

-Jon Kabat-Zinn

After the doozy of a year 2020 was, this quote is more relevant than ever.  Some things are out of our control.  The good news is the way we approach those things are still in our control.  Bring on the waves.

#12 "Being out there in the ocean – God’s creation – it’s like a gift he has given us to enjoy."

-Bethany Hamilton

#13 “Some beach, somewhere, there’s a big umbrella casting shade over an empty chair. Palm trees are growin’, warm breeze is blowin’. I picture myself right there, on some beach, somewhere."

-Blake Shelton lyric

#14 "May you always have a shell in your pocket and sand in your shoes."

-Unknown

#15 “Take time in a place you love, restore your spirit on the beach."

- Luanne Rice

Today was about chasing sun-rays, beach waves, and sunsets. All things beautiful that give you peace are worth chasing. Everything else isn't.

april mae monterrosa

#16 "Today was about chasing sun-rays, beach waves, and sunsets. All things beautiful that give you peace are worth chasing. Everything else isn’t.”

– April Mae Monterrosa

There is something so peaceful about a walk on a beach just before, during, and after a sunset. I love the end of a sun-filled day and the optimistic feeling when there is the chance to do it all over again in the morning.

#17 "Your only worry should be if the tide is going to reach your chair.”

– based on Zac Brown Band lyric

#18 "There’s no place like home--except for the beach.”

– Unknown

#19 "To go out with the setting sun on an empty beach is to truly embrace your solitude.”

Jeanne Moreau

-Unknown

Life is short.  Buy the beach house.

#21 "Life is short.  Buy the beach house."

...or at least Airbnb on a regular basis!  Basically, you can't take it with you.  We have a finite number of healthy days on this earth.  Enjoy it while you can--and if you're in a position to enjoy it from the deck of your beach house, even better.

- Janne Robinson

After a visit to the beach, it's hard to believe that we live in a material world.

pam shaw

#26 “After a visit to the beach, it’s hard to believe that we live in a material world.”

Pam Shaw

I can really relate to the beach quote. After spending time on the beach, I always have the same thought: "Why bother with material things? Do I really NEED a huge house or the most expensive car? What is the point?" The realization is always the same. No, I do not need any of those things--but I DO need more time at the beach or otherwise out in nature!

#27 “Our memories of the ocean will linger on, long after our footprints in the sand are gone.”

Unknown

#28 “The beach is not always a place, sometimes it’s a feeling.”

– Unknown

#29 “I love the sea's sounds and the way it reflects the sky. The colors that shimmer across its surface are unbelievable. This, combined with the color of the water over white sand, surprises me every time.”

– John Dyer

#30 "Changes in latitude, changes in attitude."

- Jimmy Buffet lyric

You will love the ocean. It makes you feel small, but not in a bad way. Small because you realize you're part of something bigger.

lauren myracle

#31 "You will love the ocean. It makes you feel small, but not in a bad way. Small because you realize you’re part of something bigger.”

– Lauren Myracle

That car repair that needs to be made? Really, not that huge of a deal in the grand scheme of things.  That stressful meeting you've replayed in your head a hundred times? No biggie. This beach quote is a reminder that the beach has a special way of putting things in perspective.  There are bigger things in life that you'll have time to worry about.  Don't sweat the small stuff--things will work out!

#32 There is the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number—living things both large and small.

Psalm 104:25

#33 I love the ocean. I’ve always liked the blue, so tranquil and peaceful and gliding. And the fear of it.”

Walking on the beach brings a smile to my face. The beach where children play and parents are not in the rat-race. Everyone is happy on that day!

catherine pulsifer

#36 "Walking on the beach brings a smile to my face. The beach where children play and parents are not in the rat-race. Everyone is happy on that day!"

- Catherine Pulsifer

Some of my happiest times are when I'm playing catch with my daughters in the ocean, or sitting next to my wife while we watch our girls laugh and have a good time with each other without the distractions of everyday life. They are moments you wish you could freeze in time and stay in forever!

#37 "Gonna get off of these highways, wake up in some bay, with sunshine on my face, Saint Christopher on a silver chain, say a prayer, sail away."

#40 “Sky above, sand below, peace within.”

– Unknown

I know I don't get there often enough, but God knows I surely try.  It's a magic kind of medicine that no doctor could prescribe.

jimmy buffet lyric

#41 "I know I don't get there often enough, but God knows I surely try. It's a magic kind of medicine that no doctor could prescribe."

- Jimmy Buffet lyric

I'm not an anti-modern medicine guy by any means, but it seems like we live in an era where there is a pill for any ailment. Sometimes getting outdoors, going for a hike, or finding that "one particular harbor" can help us reframe, feel closer to God, and cure us of some of our ailments and worries.

#42 “When anxious, uneasy and bad thoughts come, I go to the sea, and the sea drowns them out with its great wide sounds, cleanses me with its noise, and imposes a rhythm upon everything in me that is bewildered and confused.”

Covid-19 can cancel just about everything--but it can’t cancel the outdoors!

jeramie eginoire

#46 "Covid-19 can cancel just about everything--but it can’t cancel the outdoors!"

- Jeramie Eginoire

I know what you're thinking.  How can this list begin with a beach quote from one of the most inspirational people in history, and then begin to wrap up with a quote from a knucklehead like me.  Well, the truth is, one of the main reasons I included it is because my oldest daughter thinks it's "cringy" when I say things like this and I'd hate to miss an opportunity to be "cringeworthy"--but--it's true!  The Covid-19 pandemic has awakened a great appreciation within me and others for the outdoors and sharing time with loved ones--especially at the beach!

#47 “Every time I slip into the ocean, it’s like going home.”

Sylvia Earle

#48 “Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air.”

– Ralph Waldo Emerson

#49 “Time wasted at the beach is time well spent.”

– Unknown

#50 "Little bit of sun on my skin. A hammock. A book. Never gonna look back, once my feet hit the sand."

- Kenny Chesney lyric
